Caramel adds to the rich sweetness, which continues through to the finish. Dessert-like on the palate, Muckety-Muck 25-year-old comes across like an apple pie – ripe apples, brown sugar, sweet dough.
#Muckety muck full
The nose is full of brown sugar, vanilla, and orchard fruits with a slight citrusy (orange) top note. And my goodness, this single grain whisky just gets better with age.īottled at 95.5% abv, Muckety-Muck is comprised of American first-fill casks, allowing for the character of the distillate to shine through.

Muckety-Muck 25-year-old, the latest Orphan Barrel release, is the follow-up release to a 24-year-old bottling. Luckily, on occasion, we get to enjoy those aging stocks. The Port Dundas distillery was demolished a little more than a decade ago, but the remaining stocks continue to age. Appealingly, they can also be much less expensive than comparably old single malts.Photo courtesy of Orphan Barrel Whisky Distilling Company Still, grain whiskies (especially old ones) can be delicious, with dessert-y flavors like cereal, pastries, custard, and toffee. Serious Scotch drinkers sometimes look down on grain whisky as inferior to malt-milder, less complex, made primarily to stretch more flavorful malts and keep costs down. The way drinkers most frequently encounter it is as a constituent in blended Scotch whiskies, which are a mixture of malt and grain whisky. It can be single (the product of one distillery), or blended (the product of multiple distilleries). In practice, it’s usually distilled on massive continuous column stills from mostly wheat or corn, with a small amount of malted barley. Grain whisky is a Scottish whisky category that refers to any whisky distilled from a mash that isn’t 100% malted barley. Many Orphan Barrel releases (although not all) have been bourbons, but Muckety Muck is something different: a single grain whisky from the Port Dundas Distillery, an enormous grain distillery that operated in Glasgow and closed its doors in 2010.
